The Fragility of Home

How secure are we in our homes? From economic insecurity to natural and man-made disasters, all our homes are on shaky ground. We may be forced from our homes due to political persecution, or our family may be breaking apart. Whether tract home, apartment, or mansion, a stable home, it turns out, can be illusory, just like Willy Loman’s “fragile-seeming” house in Arthur Millers tragic Death of a Salesman. Panels consisting of words and phrases about home were sewn in a traditional log cabin quilt pattern, then cut apart and reconstructed, thereby disrupting the comforting pattern. Secondary squares appear, and lines become uneven, not allowing for the eye to rest. The quilt may be large enough to cover a bed yet is unable to bring stability.
