Basketball and Art, Part 2

Share

After five months of being in a creative and general funk, and with pro basketball shut down, I joined a critique group with eleven other talented, creative, intelligent, articulate artists. We’ve only had two virtual meetings, but I really enjoy them. I had met several of the women in person, known others by their work, but one I didn’t know anything about: Susan Sparks Michael.

At our first virtual meeting, when everyone gave their introductory spiel, Susan pointed us to her Instagram account. She said she hated her handwriting, but she jotted down thoughts in her own hand as posts. Since I have two monitors, I can easily look something up while being in a Zoom meeting. Wow, I thought, what a cool Instagram feed. It’s very artistic. I should do something like that. Susan is also on Facebook, and now that I’m her friend, I get to see more of her work. Last week she posted a photo of one of her pieces, and I immediately thought of basketball.

If you are a regular reader of our blog, you might recall that just before California and basketball shut down in March 2020, I wrote a blog post about art, basketball and Pixeladies. If you want to read about how I get from quilts to basketball, you might enjoy reading that post.

Back to Black Flowers. I must admit I didn’t even see the black flowers until I read the title. Could it be that NBA basketball is back? I’ve been watching all the games from the bubble in Orlando, so you should forgive me for seeing the basketball backboard before I saw the flowers.

Look, I said to myself, Susan even put a ladder next to the basketball hoop, so that my 5’2” body in my Bam Adebayo jersey could climb the ladder and dunk my WNBA ball. What a pal!

By the way, if you want to learn how to make collages like the one at the top of the page, there’s still time to sign up for our online Photoshop Elements Essentials classes. We’re also starting our Digital Designing class next week. Sign up now at www.pixeladies.com/classes. In the meantime, go Heat!
