“The Language of Color 11!” Yes, we’ve actually made 11 pieces in our pencil series on race.* We’ve donated this one to Studio Art Quilts Associates for its annual benefit auction. The auction runs online September 10 – October 3. “The Language of Color 11: What’s the Point of White Pencils Only?” (12″ x 12″) is in Section 3. See more views of LOC 11 in our portfolio.

The Uniqueness of LOC 11

You might think that after ten shots at this topic, we would have run out of something to say. Not really. For one, we concentrated on the pencil leads in this piece, emphasizing the tips of the pencils as heads on people. This is also only one of two pieces that is really positive in nature. Finding positive words about race in newspapers and magazines is not that easy! The other “positive” piece is our homage to Desmond and Leah Tutu. You can read about it here.

Our Favorite Language of Color Quilt

Hey, they’re like your kids. You don’t really have a favorite. BUT, we do really really like “The Language of Color 9: Color Dissonance” (30″ x 30″). To begin with, we made the color of the pencil leads different than the shafts they sit on. It creates, at least in our minds, a dissonance that begs further inspection. To emphasize this dissonance, we quilted jagged lines. It’s also one of our larger LOC quilts. It was fun to work in that size for this series. See more views of this piece here.

Ours isn’t the only piece available in the SAQA Benefit Auction, there are over 400 pieces! We even made our dream collections. Click here for Deb’s and here for Kris’.

* Full disclosure: LOC 4 is an unfinished pencil skirt! Don’t know when we’ll get back to that.
